Instagram reminds users of privacy policy change
Instagram users: there’s a change coming this week.
Those who use the photo service should have received a reminder from the company about its scheduled switch over to new terms of service. In that e-mail, Instagram reiterated that the change will not include controversial language related to how the photos can be used for advertising.
The company also said that the new terms of service take effect on Saturday, not today as originally planned.
In an e-mail to its users, the company pointed to a blog post from last month that went over some of the highlights they want people to keep in mind ahead of the switch.
While there are no changes to the question of who owns photos on Instagram’s site — users — there are some provisions that allow the company to share more data with its parent company, Facebook.
“Our updated privacy policy helps Instagram function more easily as part of Facebook by being able to share info between the two groups,” the company said. Instagram said that this helps it fight spam and detect system problems both companies notice and also will allow both companies to build products and features together.
Instagram faced massive user backlash last month when the changes it originally proposed seemed to indicate Instagram could sell user photos to advertisers without users’ consent.
After many users threatened to leave the service, including high-profile account holders such as National Geographic, Instagram announced it would not make those changes.
